Dr. Edith Winters Kimbrough

Clergywoman

Dr. Edith Winters Kimbrough, a trailblazing minister and educator, is the first African American Baptist woman ordained, in Nashville, Tennessee. Dr. Kimbrough has fought for freedom and justice, not only in a racist educational system, but also in churches across the country that have not accepted women, in the preaching ministry.

“Edith is a woman with many gifts, talents and skills. As a teacher, she not only teaches students how to learn, but how to live and become aware of the many opportunities, for social crisis ministry, within their reach. She has been a freedom fighter, since the early 60’s. Passion for social justice is in her every breath. The many lives she has touched through her counseling, sermons and teaching the “Word” can not be numbered.”
– DR. BERNARD LAFAYETTE, JR., President of American Baptist College – 1993-1999, Distinguished Scholar Residence, University of Rhode Island

“Dr. Edith Winters Kimbrough is one of the brightest theological minds of this age. Her training and experiences, as an educator and minister are exemplary.”
– DR. SHERMAN R. TRIBBLE, Pastor, New Visions Baptist Church, Nashville, Tennessee
